IT IS rumoured that Merseyside's Chief Constable, Ken Oxford, has no friends. This is not true.

In a heartwarming display of fraternal solidarity, Jim Jardine, chairperson of the Police Federation, addressing his Merseyside branch, loyally came to the support of his colleague and savaged Ken's critics.

These included "churchmen rushing to sign cheques for supporters of the mob" [when? where? we cry, let's have some!], "so-called community leaders" who encourage them, and the police authority "elected leaders ...(who)... undermine the position of their chief constable"

''This is all part of a hate campaign waged against the Merseyside police for several years. Last year it was Jimmy Kelly. This year it is Toxteth Jimmy Kelly, you will remember, was the hooligan who maliciously hurled his body at Mersey policemen's boots and truncheons. So effective was this suicidal attack in whipping up hatred against the Force, that the action attracted hundreds of imitators — from the determined who threw themselves under the wheels of police landrovers or pinned themselves to walls in front of police vehicles, to the hundreds of amateurs who beat themselves unconseious in police cells and the backs of vans.

You tell it to them, Jim. It comes to something when you can't beat someone to death on your own patch without some do-gooder councillor bleating about 'brutality" r. • the fear of meeting a fate worse than death — losing the Tories' 19,000 majority.

But not to fear. Help is at hand. 200 SPUC supporters will be out calling for a Tory vote. For unlike his opponent Shirley Williams, who is also anti-abortion, Mr Butcher has promised if elected to join the 'pro-life' MPs in further restricting women's right to get an Being 'pro-life', Mr Butcher is, of course, in lavour of capital punishment.
