STEPHEN Kitson was released by South African police last week after a storm of protest their clumsy attempts at a frame-up. Kitson was arrested while visiting his father, Dave Kitson, in Johannesburg, where he is serving a 20-year sentence for alleged sabotage and membership of the African National Congress. The police claimed that Stephen Kitson was making sketches of the prison where his father was held in order to plan an escape, and tried to link him to a successful escape from the same prison in 1979.
While he was held, Kit= son was kept in solitary confinement, forced to stand for hours without sleep, slapped around the face, and threatened with further torture. Kitson's bad state was confirmed by the Foreign Office official who visited him in prison.
On the day he arrived back in England, Kitson's aunt - who had • been the first to tell his family it Britain of his arrest an‹ who acted as a contac between Dave Kitson arx his family - was foun brutally murdered, wit severe bruising on her hear and some teeth knocker out.
Even the South Africa: police are treating this a murder (which is more the they do when people die : police custody). It remair. to be seen if anyone i charged with the murde as there is widesprea speculation that the L ing was done by an age: of the government another way of getting : the Kitsons and incre:: ing the isolation of Da: Kitson in prison.
