TED JONES used to be so staunch a Thatcher supporter that he paid £2,000 to place an advertisement in the Financial Times backing her economic policy.

That was two years ago when Ted Jones owned five companies, was worth £2 million, and ran a £23,000 Mercedes. Now he's broke. The car has been repossessed and the receivers have sold off his firms.

His 250 employees were told that he didn't have the money to pay them - at least, not after Barclays Bank had been repaid - and were pitched onto the dole queue.

"Businessmen like myself were led to believe that after twelve months things would pick up", complains Jones.

The fat cats still in business are those who support Thatcher but unlike Jones don't believe a word of any of those promises about recovery.
