Where to find Socialist Organiser THIS election campaign has been a test of how much Labour's left has achieved since 1979. And it has shown that we have a very long way still to go.

• More left wing policies got into the manifesto than at previous elections. And more constituencies have selected left-wingers as Labour candidates.

But most of the left have backed down more and more as the election approached. Now Dennis Healey is a leading figure of Labour's elecSCOTLAND Glasgow. This year we - were involved in efforts to mount a 'Socialists for a Labour Victory' campaign for the election.

We fought consistently for this to be a rank and file campaign, rather than just one tied to national level 'celebrities': experience has shown that only such a rank and file campaign could have stood its ground and waged a real fight against the right wing sabotage.

SO is sold at the Prospect Centre , Throughout we have argued that the struggle for Labour democracy needs to be linked to a fight to transform the trade unions, and to the direct class struggle. We have established a network of Socialist Organiser groups, linked in the Socialist Organiser Alliance, with the aim of creating a cohesive Marxist left wing capable of holding the line for principled policies and integrating different fronts of struggle into a strategy for tution Hill. Next meeting: Tuesday 21: Marek Garztecki (from Solidarnosc Trade Union Working Group) on the present condition of Solidarnosc. Phone 471 1448 for venue. SO is sold at the Other Bookshop, Digbeth High Street.

We have been active in the trade unions as much as in the Labour Party. Last year, tor example, we initiated 'Health Workers tor the Full Claim', which produced bulletins and rallied militants during the NHS pay dispute. We have played a leading role in the Leyland Action Committee and in struggles in BL.

After the election, whatever the results, the left will need to regroup and reconsider tactics. Socialist Organiser will be arguing that a stronger organised Marxist left is irreplaceable for the coming struggles.
