100 people packed into Basingstoke's Central Library to hear Larry Knight, NUM Branch Secretary from Snowdown colliery, Kent, talk about the miners' strike at a meeting called jointly by Basingstoke Trades Council and Labour Dennis Skinner, the Labour Party's invited guest speaker, had to cancel however, due to the debate on abolishing the GLC. The meeting raised nearly £70 and since then Trades Council officers and Socialist Organiser supporters have decided to propose that the labour moverent in towns not affected by the strike adopt a pit.
Basingstoke Trades Council will be asking if the NUM will allow us to adopt Snowdown colliery.
Another support meeting was arranged in Southampton by their Trades Council and Labour Party, and a Hampshire committee of the South East Region TUC is organising a march through Southampton on May 5.
